Mississippi Comeback Sauce is an easy pantry fry sauce that is great for dipping chicken tenders, shrimp, and all your favorite fried foods. The sauce is also great on burgers, roast vegetables, and salads!
Why you'll love comeback sauce
Mississippi comeback sauce is a delightful treasure that every blog reader with a taste for Southern cuisine should discover. Its creamy blend of mayonnaise, chili sauce, garlic, and a hint of Worcestershire packs a flavorful punch that can elevate simple dishes.
This versatile condiment is a must-try for anyone who appreciates bold, savory flavors, perfect for dressing salads, dunking fries, or slathering on burgers.
Not only is Comeback sauce an all-purpose wonder, but it also carries a charming backstory rooted in the heart of Mississippi.
Originating from a Greek-owned restaurant in Jackson, Mississippi, in the late 1930s or early 1940s at the Mayflower Cafe or one of the Dennery Restaurants. It became popular and kept people returning for more of this regional sauce.

Ingredient notes
- Mayo - use your favorite mayonnaise or you can use your own homemade mayo. I used Duke's Mayo for this sauce.
- Chili sauce - this is the spiced-up tomato-based kind you can find in the ketchup section of the grocery store.
- Hot sauce - use your favorite, but I prefer Crystal's, Texas Pete, or Cholula.
- Lemon juice - freshly squeezed is great, but you can also substitute with lime juice or white vinegar in a pinch.
How to make comeback sauce
In a small bowl, add the mayo, ketchup, and chili sauce.
Add in the Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, hot sauce, mustard powder, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika.
Stir together with a spoon or whisk until all the ingredients are combined.
Tips for a delicious recipe!
Swap out the paprika with smoked paprika to give the sauce a hint of smokiness.
If you have no chili sauce on hand, you can swap it out for more ketchup.
This can be made up to three days in advance.
Serving suggestions
Serve this as a dip for fried chicken or chicken nuggets. In place of remoulade sauce for Maryland-style crab cakes. As a zesty dip for Scotch eggs. You can dip your fries, tater tots, and roasted vegetables.
Storage Instructions
Store in an airtight container or jar for up to two weeks.
